Hi, I’m Dr. Daniel Sugai, MD.
I’m a Hawai'i-born, Harvard-Trained, Board-Certified Dermatologist, and a Content Creator on Social Media, best known as @DrSPF on TIKTOK.
I have the two best jobs in the world. I spend half my time with my amazing medical staff serving patients for all their skincare needs and conditions, and the other half of my time providing entertainment and education on social media. I get to be my own boss, come up with my own ideas, and sometimes, I even work with dermatological beauty brands like CeraVe, LaRoche Posay, SkinCeuticals and more.Â
I grew up on the North Shore of O'ahu, a small rural town. I went to public school, studied hard and knew I wanted to be a doctor, despite being the first one in my family to choose a career in medicine. I was fortunate to enjoy art, theater, sports and academics throughout my life. I felt like medicine, specifically dermatology was a perfect fit for me as it combined visual arts with science.
Although I’m successful now, I carry an underdog mentality in everything I do. Growing up in Hawai'i might sound glamorous to some, but my small-town upbringing was very modest. I had to work really hard, and I felt like a long shot candidate when applying to medical school and to my dermatology residency at Harvard. I had my fair share of detractors who reminded me of my long odds when I was daring to pursue my dreams
I started social media in February of 2020. My medical assistant one day grabbed my phone and downloaded the Instagram app for the first time. Before then, I didn’t even know what an IG story was. I only had Facebook before that, and would occasionally jump on YouTube to DIY something around the house.
